BUS 301: MANAGEMENT OF INSURANCE (2 Units)

BUS 302: COMPANY LAW (3 Units)

History and development of Nigerian company law, the Corporate Affairs Commission, formation of a company, registration of companies, comparison between registered companies and other business forms, legal nature of a company, corporate veil, public offers and sale of securities, shares and debentures, membership of a company, corporate administration, Majority rule and minority protection, directors, secretaries, meetings and resolutions, financial statements and reports, reconstruction, merger and take-overs, winding up.

BUS 303: BUSINESS LAW (3 Units)

The Nigerian legal system – sources of Nigerian law, hierarchy Nigerian courts. Formation of a contract, content of contract, exclusion clauses, contracts-in-restraint of trade, termination of contract and remedies for breach of contract. Nature of a contract of sale of goods, sale and rights of parties, ownership and risk, seller’s obligations as to quality and delivery, hire purchase, consumer protection law, documentary transactions and carriage of goods. Formation of agency, authority of an agent, relationship between agent and principal and third party, termination of agency. The legal relationship of banker and customer, negotiable instruments; the legal principles governing secured credit transactions and bankers commercial credit, Nature of insurance contracts. Tax laws in Nigeria. Commercial arbitration and other disputes settlement mechanisms.

BUS 304: BUSINESS RESEARCH METHODS (3 Units)

It is design to equip the students with the skill of conceptualizing, defining and planning the scientific investigation of business problems. It includes nature of science, scientific research, basic concept in research (theory, hypothesis, model, inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning) identification and definition of research problems, selecting a research topic, literature review, specification of the population understudy, sampling, sampling methods, measurement, reliability and validity, questionnaire construction, data collection methods (surveys, experiments, case study, observation), data analysis and hypothesis testing using linear correlation, regression analysis, ANOVA, t-test, and non-parametric statistics among others, report writing, reference styles.

BUS 305: PROMOTION AND SALES MANAGEMENT (2 Units)

An analysis of the advertising, publicity and public relations. Elements of the promotional mix with emphasis on the role of management in each element. The importance of each of these three element of the promotion mix, sales promotion and personal selling element of the promotion mix, sales and sales force management, total sales process, selection, training, motivation, and compensation of sales personnel, sales forecasting, sales territory management and sales analysis. The emphasis of the course is to enable students to plan, organize and direct the sales force for the attainment of sales goal and objectives

BUS 306: CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR (2 Units)

Role of consumer in Marketing, Consumer Perspectives and View Points, Overview of Consumer Decision- Process behaviour. Group influence on Consumer: Culture Context of Consumer Behaviour, Social Stratification, Reference groups and sub culture influences. The nature and influence of individual: Predisposition. Information process, evaluative criteria, attitudes, personality. Attitude change and persuasive communication: nature of communication; Attitude change, Decision Processes: Problem recognition process, Evaluation processes, Purchasing processes, Post purchase processes. Consumerism: Issues in consumerism, current status of consumer behaviour research.

BUS 307: MANAGEMENT THEORY AND PRACTICE (3 Units) Concept of theory in the physical and social sciences, Levels of theory, The features of theory in management, Links between management theories and management models, Practice of management conduct as a test of good management theory, Existing difficulties of developing useful management theories in Nigeria and other developing countries. Theories of management, e.g. the scientific management movement, the human relations movement, theory X and theory Y. the grid managerial behavioral movement. Management by objectives, Quantitative and behavioral control models, testing specific theories and models in Nigeria. Criteria for locating bad management practices, and ideas or how better management theories may be introduced to particular Nigerian organizations.

BUS 308: HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (3 Units) This course offers students the opportunity to become sufficiently endowed in the skills of making effective decisions about human resources in organizations. The basic concepts of HRM and the skills learned in this course are applicable to all types of organizations and jobs. Specifically, the course gives special consideration to aspects of strategic HRM such as staffing, training, and development, performance management, compensation and employee relation. Human resources management in Nigeria; globalization and human resources management; managing people at work; human resources planning; motivational factors in human resources development. In addition, the course allows students to be equipped with the various tools and techniques available to human resource professionals such as environmental scanning. Delphi technique and transition probability matrices, performance appraisal instrument, selection methods and job evaluation methods. Thus, students will learn theories and applications involved in effectively managing people in organizations.

BUS 309: BUSINESS FINANCE (2 Units)

The role, functions and organization of financial management; forms of business enterprises; legal structure and finance constraints of business enterprises; uses and sources of financing business; concepts and analysis of funds flow; optimum capital structure; credits and institutions; determinants and implications of dividend policy; financial statements and analysis; capital budgeting.

BUS 310: SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT (2 Units)

Business and Entrepreneurship function, forms of Business Ownership, Nature, Roles and problems and their Implications. Marketing and Financial Management in a small company. Managing employees in a small company, starting a new business venture. The future of small business in Nigeria.

BUS 311: MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (3 Units) An overview of MIS-Information flows and communication theory; System theory-Basic concept of a system by system Objective and Environment; introduction to Data Processing; Manual mechanical and Electronic Processing methods. The Structure of MIS computerized Information Systems, Computer Language, Programming and Flow Charting, System Design and Analysis for Computer Application; Relevance of Computers to Decision-making and Constraints to Development of MIS. Hardware and software, introducing to common computer programming languages used in business (COBOL, FORTRAN, SPSS etc.) Electronic Data Processing)

BUS 312: APPLICATION OF COMPUTER TO BUSINESS (2 Units)

Concepts of information age computing, including: smart devices, societal implications, history, hardware function, sensors, networks, problem solving, virtualization and software concepts. Internet technologies, such as: Web2.0, rich Internet applications, streaming communication tools, responsible use of social networking, and cloud computing. Privacy and security is an underpinning across all topics. Students will gain practical, lab-based experience with spreadsheets, database systems, HTML design, and various operating systems including Windows, MacOS X, Linux, iOS and Android. Virtual Machine managers such as VirtualBox will be used on student laptops.

.BUS 313: ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR (2 Units)

Concept of behaviour, organization, managers, administrators, performance. Individual behavioral process such as personal systems, self concept development, interaction style, group behaviour processes such as informal structures, norms of works and play, status –based rewards and punishment leadership, task distribution, and performance appraisal. Theories of organizational behaviour and relevance to Nigeria. Behavioral model-building. Exercise in simple models of behaviour observable in Nigeria organization. Making changes in individuals and groups. Theory of behavioral change, managing resistance to planned changes, behavioral modification, and formal work system.

BUS 314: INDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENT (3 Units)

Management principles and practice to enhance efficiency in an establishment, including Management functions; Tools of management: forecasting, planning, execution, organization, control, delegation of authority. Human relations, Motivation. Workgroups in an industrial setup.Leadership, personnel management. Capital structure, sources of funds, financial and operating ratios to measure results and efficiency share/dividend/profit plans. Break-even Analysis Budgetary control, market research and product development.

BUS 315: COMMERCIAL LAW (3 Units)

The Nigerian Legal System: Sources of Nigerian Law; Hierarchy of Nigerian Court; Law of Contracts; Commercial Contracts; Commercial Relations between Persons; Commercial Arbitration; Unfair Competition; Passing off and Trade Libel; Company Law: Introduction to Company Law; Powers and Functions Directors; Introduction to Taxation Laws; Company Registration.
